I said I don't know who ate your plant, mom.

That's part of what I enjoy about being around puppies. The people around soften just as I do. Being with a puppy is such a wholesome event for everybody involved. We crouch down, we start smiling. We're all deeply interested in a little creature who has no idea why his existence is causing such a reaction. But he's overly cute.

Looking at this gathering, I know exactly who I want to send it to. I'll find out whether my friend has any affectionate words left after describing every puppy as the most beautiful dog she's ever seen.

Affection doesn't look the same with everyone. My friend is usually reserved with people, but that doesn't mean she doesn't care. I appreciate the ways she shows up for me, even when they don't come with a sentimental speech. I don't expect that either. I think we each have different ways of showing love, and it has to do with the way we learned to love and the way we can. And there’s something beautiful about noticing every person's unique way of showing affection.

My friend won't write me a poem celebrating our friendship, but she remembers something I mentioned weeks ago, asks how my exam went, and saves me a seat at any table without having to be asked. Those are the little things that matter sometimes. And I love hearing something sweet too, mainly because I tend to show love that way. But I'm also learning to recognize the affection and tenderness in things that aren't said quite so directly.
